The majority of occupational health hazards arise from inhaling chemical agents in the form of vapors, gases, dusts, fumes, and mists, or by skin contact with these materials. The degree of risks of handling a given substance depends on the magnitude and duration of exposure.

WE ANTICIPATE, RECOGNIZE, EVALUATE, AND CONTROL environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace that may result in injury, illness, or impairment, or affect the well-being of workers and members of the community. The various environmental factors or stresses than can cause sickness and impaired health or significant discomfort in workers are classified as chemical, physical, biological, or ergonomic CHEMICAL HAZARDS.

Examples of some environmental factors

Physical Hazards

Problems caused by such things as noise, temperatures extremes, ionizing radiation, non ionizing radiation, and pressure extremes are physical stresses. It is important that employers be alerted to these hazards because of the possible immediate or cumulative effects on the health of employees.

Biological Hazards

These are living in organisms or its properties that can cause an adverse response in humans. They can be part of the total environment or associated with a particular occupation.

Ergonomic Hazards

These include improperly designed tools, work areas, or work procedures. Improper lifting or reaching, poor visual conditions, or repeated motions in an awkward position can result in accidents or illnesses in the occupational environment. The benefits being measured in terms of human efficiency and well-being are of prime importance.
